Red and Black Fire Ants were imported and spread through nine Southern States, including Texas, in the late 1930's. These dangerous little predators have since spread Northward through the U.S. The Red Imported Fire Ant is the most common in our area, and have both single-queen, and multiple-queen colonies. Red Imported Fire Ant colonies can contain millions of fire ants, and as most of us know, can be very aggressive if their mound is disturbed. Fire ants prefer open, sunny areas such as lawns and open fields for building mounds, and require moisture for survival. Lawns which are irrigated in warm weather, and naturally damp in cold weather, are perfect environments for these stinging pests.
